Sculpture Welland

Sculpture Welland finds its origin in a protective construction for a gas pipeline at the bottom of the Northsea. Kuijer deconstructed the original pyramid-shaped construction and selected three parts, each placed on different pedestals. Kuijer considers this work as a tribute to the relationship between Rotterdam and the oil and gas industry, as renewable energy sources gradually replace fossil fuels. At the same time, Welland is deeply grounded in the abstract geometrical legacy in Dutch art, while also remaining connected to the tradition of the found object in 20th century art.
